Barry D. McCall

background

Began piano lessons at the age of 5 in the Carnegie Hall Building in New York City with Nola Arndt, wife of the late composer Felix Arndt who had become famous with his piano piece, "Nola".   I performed frequently at various organizations and presented my first formal recital in Steinway Hall at the age of 12.

I studied Harmony with the late E. Harold Duval, a noted organist and former student of R. Huntington Woodman and Clarence Dickinson. Later I studied advanced piano with concert pianists, Herbert Rogers and Sheldon Shkolnik and Harmony /Composition with the late composer and teacher Frederick Werle, former Dean of the Mannes College of Music. I continued my music studies at Brooklyn College and at Juilliard's Extension Division in New York City.

I also studied voice and sang with many church choirs and choral groups through the years. In my early 20's I performed the roles of PishTush in the Mikado and the Major General in the Pirates of Penzance at the Hunter Playhouse in New York City which was great fun to do. Later I was Assistant Director of the Garden State Opera Company In New Jersey. Also I became a board member of the Piano Teachers Congress of New York and conducted piano workshop sessions for students.

Moved to Lancaster, PA in 1977 and developed my teaching practice there and became a performing member of Lancaster's Musical Art Society and later served a 2 year term as President,1988-1990. I was a councilor and advisor with the Lancaster County Workshop for Young Performing Artists and was called to Judge in many local piano competitions for the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs.
